Abstract

Suicide attempt consists of a non-fatal self-injurious action, which is very common in our country. The research aimed to analyze suicide attempts by toxic substances attended and notified at the Ceará Toxicological Assistance Center (CEATOX-CE). The study was an epidemiological, descriptive, cross-sectional, retrospective study with a quantitative approach. It was held at CEATOX-CE, located at the municipal hospital Instituto Dr. José Frota, in the city of Fortaleza. Data were collected through the records of patients who committed suicide attempts due to the use of toxic agents between the period of June 2017 to June 2018. It was observed that drugs and associations between two or more substances are the most used means. In the sociodemographic profile, we verified the predominance of females, aged 20 - 29 years and students. The urban area and residences were the most registered places, with Fortaleza having the highest number of cases. Through this study, it was possible to notice the wide use of medicines belonging to ordinance 344/98 demonstrating the irrational way in their use. The identification of the epidemiological profile, characterizing this at-risk population, makes it possible to direct public policy actions focused on this theme, suggesting the strengthening of the inspection and control of these agents.
