Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the assessment made by nursing assistants and technicians regarding their practices related to medication administration in a pediatric hospital in the State of Tocantins. Cross-sectional study, with data collection carried out upon approval by the Ethics Committee, in January and February 2020. The research included 40 nursing technicians and assistants from the aforementioned hospital, who responded to an instrument constructed and validated by Brazilian researchers and composed of 27 items evaluated on a Likert-type scale. The items in this instrument, which indicate activities performed by professionals less frequently (worst scores - 1 and 2) corresponded to the following actions: taking only the prescribed medications to a bed to a single patient, returning the leftover medications to the pharmacy and administering medications per verbal order only in emergency cases. The score 5 (desirable) was assigned by 100% of professionals only in four of 27 items (14.81%) of actions aimed at the medication process; these items were related to the correct drug, route, dose and pharmaceutical form. Therefore, there are deficiencies identified in the pediatric medication process, which must be considered and remedied to contribute to patient safety in this scenario.
