Abstract

The motorcycle has become a popular vehicle, and in turn it is the means of transport that represents the highest rate of accidents, as its use, whether as a means of transport, work or simply leisure, has increased rapidly in recent years. The objective was to trace the profile and behavior of the motorcyclist, using the traffic behavior scale for motorcyclists. This is an epidemiological, cross-sectional and quantitative study, in which a sample of 161 motorcyclists was obtained. Data were collected in September and October 2013, through a questionnaire with closed questions. The results showed that among the behaviors observed, the lack of use of Individual Safety Equipment stood out, as the only one used by everyone routinely was the helmet; the use of alcoholic beverages combined with driving was reported by 46.9%; issues related to speeding were reported by 64.8% of motorcyclists; stunts are still practiced by 45.8% of respondents and attention errors reached 46.6% of respondents. The study allowed us to know and characterize these drivers, assisting in the development of public policies, showing the need to intensify inspection and strengthen preventive and defensive conducts in traffic.
