Abstract

Sociodemographic factors are important determinants for increased vulnerability to HIV, being associated with living conditions and position in society. The motivation for this research project was to discuss the representations of vulnerability to HIV in female sex workers, including tracing the sociodemographic profile of sex workers in Floriano – PI; report life trajectories and social contexts; to present feelings, ideas and experiences expressed by women; explore the ways in which these individuals communicate and produce; discuss the spaces filled by these women. This is a qualitative study, developed with female sex workers of Floriano, Piauí State. The sample was defined using the “snowball” sampling technique, which uses reference chains. The collection of data of interest for this study comprises verification, through an observation instrument to assess representations of vulnerability to HIV. Analysis took place through the Theory of Social Representations, due to the possibility of capturing the participants' own interpretation, understanding the relationship between behavior, thought and action of the groups. The experiences of the interviewed are built through individual and collective, personal and professional, as well as sociocultural relationships. The speech and action of these women reveal their feelings and their connection with the vulnerability to which they are subjected.
