Abstract

The main objective of this study was to analyze the incidence and factors associated with precursor lesions and cancer in endometrial polyps in women undergoing polypectomy. This is a retrospective cross-sectional study of a descriptive and quantitative nature, carried out in a reference teaching hospital. The studied population consisted of 186 women. The associations of interest were verified using the chi-square test, adopting the significance level. There were significant associations between postmenopausal bleeding and hypertension, diabetes, obesity and hypothyroidism. Regarding malignancy, a 5.4 times greater chance was found for women with infertility. However, polyp size greater than 2 cm was associated with benign biopsies. Despite the risk factors for malignancy being more present in postmenopause, in this study there was a higher prevalence and incidence of endometrial polyps in menacme and premenopause. In addition, the symptom of postmenopausal bleeding was indicative of endometrial polyps and was more likely to appear in hypertensive, diabetic, obese and hypothyroid patients.
