Psychological impacts suffered by elderly people related to urinary incontinence: an integrative literature review

Abstract

Objective: To describe the psychological impacts suffered by elderly people as a result of urinary incontinence. Materials and Methods: This is an integrative literature review carried out using the EMBASE, MEDLINE, PubMed, SciELO, Scopus and Web of Science databases, using various descriptors and adopting the following inclusion criteria: full-length articles, in Portuguese, English and Spanish, from the last five years and which answered the study question. Results: The sample consisted of four articles. Most of the studies were 2023, with a quantitative approach, were concentrated in EMBASE and PubMed, with a between 11 and 1,116 participants. Among the main psychological psychological impacts experienced by these elderly people were feelings of anguish, frustration, effort, suffering and worse mental health, emotional challenges, fatigue, tiredness, low self-esteem, problems with sexual relations, difficulty interrupting negative thoughts and receiving social support, as well as identifying some contributing factors and support and coping measures for these impacts. Final Considerations: The study made it possible to identify the psychological impacts suffered by elderly people with urinary incontinence and provides coping measures and factors that can contribute to the worsening of this condition.
