O impacto da COVID-19 na saúde periodontal da população: Uma revisão de literatura

Resumen

The objective of this study was to review in the literature whether there was a worsening in the population's periodontal health due to the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. An integrative literature review, carried out in PubMed and ScienceDirect databases, using the keywords: Periodontal disease, COVID-19 Pandemic and Oral Health. Inclusion criteria: original articles published in Portuguese, Spanish and English, with full text available between 2020 and 2022. Abstract articles or articles that are not available in full were excluded. In the end, the result of 15 articles was obtained. The pandemic has reduced the frequency of visits to dental offices, especially during the lockdown period. It was also observed that the number of periodontal treatments such as dental scaling and periodontal surgeries were reduced. Long periods in isolation affected daily habits, such as poorer diet and dental hygiene, which negatively affected oral health. It can be seen that the pandemic had a negative impact on the periodontal health of the world's population, through the reduction in the number of visits to the offices and through the psychological responses of group stress that can be directly related to periodontal disease. However, more studies are needed so that this statement can be better supported.
