Abstract

Syphilis is an infectious disease classified in acquired and congenital forms and has the bacterium Treponema pallidum as its etiological agent. It is a serious public health problem and given the scarcity of studies on syphilis in pregnant women in the state of Tocantins, this research aims to analyze the epidemiological aspects related to the high values of gestational syphilis. A cross-sectional, retrospective study with a quantitative and analytical approach was carried out by consulting the Ministry of Health's (MS) Health Information System (SINAN) database from January 2009 to December 2019. 2646 cases of syphilis were diagnosed, with predominance in the 3rd trimester with 36.35% of the cases and the age group from 20 to 29 years with 62.06% of the cases. Regarding the clinical classification, the highest prevalence was that of primary syphilis, with 42.35% of the total cases. It is concluded that gestational syphilis in the state of Tocantins still presents progression in its indexes, thus evidencing the need for improvements in strategies and measures related to prenatal care.
