Abstract

Introduction: Exogenous intoxications are harmful manifestations to the individual due to inhalation, ingestion, or skin absorption of toxic substances. According to the World Health Organization, in 2015, unintentional intoxications were associated with 108 thousand deaths; our study sought to investigate the impact of this problem on the health of workers in the Tocantins. Objectives: To describe the panorama of exogenous intoxications related to work in the state of Tocantins, as well as the main causes of intoxication and the population profiles most involved. Methodology: Descriptive and retrospective epidemiological study with a quantitative approach based on data from the Notifiable Diseases Information System. Results: The State of Tocantins registered 1405 cases of exogenous intoxication related to work between 2010-2020. Demographically, the most affected group is brown and young men. The fatality rate was 0.35%, added to the 4.84% of individuals who had sequelae after intoxication. The various pesticides accounted for more than half of the cases of intoxication at work. Conclusion: Due to its lethality, high incidence, and potential to produce lasting sequelae, exogenous intoxications have shown epidemiological relevance to the health of workers in Tocantins - Brazil.
