Factors that interfere in the oral health of pregnant women in a municipality in the State of Amazonas

Abstract

Introduction: Although pregnancy is a natural biological process in a woman’s life, it generates physical, psychological, and social changes; in addition to oral changes in the periodontium. Objective: evaluate which factors influence the oral health of pregnant women in the municipality of Maués, Amazonas. Methods: A cross-sectional, retrospective and quantitative study was carried out in a basic health unit. Results: The medical records of 300 pregnant women were analyzed and data, such as the number of dental visits, main oral diseases affected in this population, age, marital status, education, origin, number of pregnancies, were collected. Of the 300 medical records that were analyzed, 160 (53.3%) were of patients that reside in the urban area; the highest percentage was of pregnant women aged between 16 and 20 years (46.6%), in a common-law marriage (69.8%) with incomplete elementary education (58.1%) and this being their first pregnancy (44.2%). The majority (28; 65.1%) of the pregnant women performed only one dental consultation during the entire pregnancy. Conclusion: It was found that that most expectant mothers only had one dental appointment during pregnancy. The mean DMFT index was 5.3 and the factors that can influence the oral health of pregnant women were age, educational level and number of pregnancies.
