Abstract

The present study aimed to analyze the main causes of emergency hospital admissions and mortality in the state of Ceará from 2008 to 2023. This is a descriptive and cross-sectional research, based on data from the Hospital Information System of the Unified Health System. A ranking of the main causes of hospital admissions and mortality was carried out, according to the International Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD 10), according to sex, color/race, age group. Pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period were considered the main cause of hospitalizations for women, while diseases of the respiratory system were among men. Regarding deaths, infectious and parasitic diseases were the main causes of male deaths and respiratory system diseases of female deaths. It is noteworthy that the main cause of death in Ceará, between 2008 and 2023, after emergency hospital admission and the second biggest cause of hospitalization, when we disregard the parameters of age group, sex and race, were respiratory diseases. The data presented can collaborate with State health managers, in order to allow the recognition of the main factors that contribute to the causes of urgent hospitalizations and the occurrence of hospital deaths in this context.
