Abstract

Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL) is a chronic disease that is widely distributed in the North Region. In Pará, VL is endemic due to the disorderly urbanization process and the equatorial climate. In this context, the present research aimed to analyze spatially and temporally the epidemiological profile of VL in the Northeast and Southeast regions of the state of Pará and its relationship with local health, sociodemographic, sanitary and environmental indicators. This is an observational, cross-sectional ecological study, with a quantitative analytical approach. The epidemiology of VL in the Northeast and Southeast of Pará between 2013 and 2022 and its relationship with local indicators was analyzed. Data were collected from the SINAN and SIH platforms. 2,945 cases, 1,639 hospitalizations and 156 deaths related to VL were reported in the regions considered. VL cases are mainly concentrated in male individuals, mixed race, between one and four years old and with incomplete primary education. In this sense, the sociodemographic variables related to the epidemiological profile of VL locally are shaped by factors such as rainfall seasonality and population dynamics. Furthermore, the number of notifications is directly related to the IDHM, and higher rates of illiteracy and poor sanitation contribute to an endemic distribution of VL.
