Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Gingival recession (GR) is the term used to define the apical migration of the marginal gingiva in relation to the cementoenamel junction, leaving the root surfaces exposed to the oral environment. The periodontal phenotype characterizes the teeth and surrounding tissues and its analysis allows for greater predictability in treatments in order to prevent trauma, inflammation and clinical and surgical complications. OBJECTIVE: To correlate the gingival phenotype with the presence of gingival recession in students of the Dentistry Course at the University of Gurupi - Tocantins. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 79 students enrolled in the Dentistry Course were evaluated for the presence of gingival recessions, affected teeth, as well as their measurements in millimeters. Through the transparency of a periodontal probe in the gingival sulcus of upper incisors or teeth with recession, the gingival phenotype pattern was assessed. RESULTS: 79 academics were evaluated, 57 female and 22 male, with an average age of 22.5 years. The prevalence of GR was 18.9% (15 students), 10 women and 5 men. No significant association was observed between GR, periodontal phenotype, gender and tooth sensitivity. Of a total of 15 students who underwent previous orthodontic treatment, 12 of them had some gingival recession.
