Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the factors associated with dental caries in adolescents. It is an observational, analytical, descriptive and transverse study with 220 adolescents from Itacoatiara, Amazonas. Sociodemographic data, oral hygiene and diet habits were collected. To evaluate the presence of dental caries, clinical examination was performed using the CPod index, according to SB Brazil 2020 criteria. Participants totaled 220 adolescents (Answer Rate: 81.5%), most male (57.7%). The study showed that 76.4% of the students had dental caries, with an average DMFT index of 3.19 and SIC index of 6.57, predominating the component Cariac. The main associated factors were: inadequate brushing, low frequency in flossing and unhealthy eating habits. Statistically significant correlation was identified between dental caries and irritability (p = 0.020) and social restrictions (p = 0.049). In the absence of caries, there was significant correlation with discomfort during brushing (p = 0.012) and difficulty speaking (p = 0.038). It is concluded that the prevalence of dental caries was high, highlighting the need for public policies directed to the oral health of adolescents in the Amazon region, focusing on preventive strategies and access to dental treatment.
