Diabetic Ketoacidosis in pediatric patients diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2

Abstract

Abstract: Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic non-communicable disease, with an accelerated growth to alarming and global levels, in which there is a decrease in the level of insulin or the inability of its action in the body. Since the beginning of the pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, it has become evident how this condition associated with diabetes can generate an aggravation in the metabolic clinical picture of the patient, such as diabetic ketoacidosis. Objective: to highlight the role of nurses in the diagnosis and care of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) in pediatric patients. Methods: An integrative literature review with a bibliographic survey in the VHL database, with articles published between 2020 and 2022. The search for articles took place in September 2022, using the descriptors “Diabetic Ketoacidosis and SARS-CoV-2” and “Diabetic Ketoacidosis and Nursing Care”. After crossing these descriptors, 448 articles were identified, and when submitted to the eligibility criteria, resulted in zero studies. Results: it is evident that nurses had difficulty in differentiating symptoms and correctly diagnosing DKA during the pandemic and lack of scientific production. Conclusion: The pandemic of the new coronavirus left several questions, mainly related to pediatrics. There was a lot of difficulty in the diagnosis of the SARS-COV-2 virus and diabetic ketoacidosis because they did not have characteristic symptoms or because of the lack of diagnosis of decompensated diabetes. With this, it was also asked: what is the role of nursing in the interventions and treatment of this disease?
