Self-perception of health and quality of life of old people living in the rural area of a municipality in the interior of Northeastern Brazil: a cross-sectional study

Abstract

Objective: To assess the self-perceived health and quality of life of elderly people living in rural areas of a municipality in the Northeast of Brazil. Method: This is a cross-sectional study carried out with rural elderly people in the municipality of Araçagi-PB. For the sample, a confidence level of 95% and a sampling error of 5% were adopted, resulting in 360 subjects after losses and refusals. For data collection, a questionnaire was applied focusing on the outcome variables "health status" and "quality of life", using SPSS software for descriptive and quantitative data analysis. Results: when looking at the "state of health" and "quality of life" variables, most of the respondents considered their level to be fair, so they saw themselves as having a reasonable level, although it could be better. With regard to the variables "satisfied with life" and "enjoys living life", the majority said they were very satisfied. This reflects that even with life's difficulties, they enjoy the life they lead. Conclusion: The study revealed that the elderly people investigated did not have a negative self-perception in relation to the outcome variables. However, it is necessary for health professionals and health policies aimed at the elderly to seek strategies to further increase the level of satisfaction.
