Abstract

This study analyzed the temporal trend of premature mortality due to Diabetes Mellitus (DM) in the municipality of Palmas, Tocantins, between 2014 and 2023. It is a cross-sectional epidemiological study based on secondary data from the Mortality Information System (SIM/DATASUS). Premature mortality (PM) was defined as deaths in the age range of 30 to 69 years. Rates were calculated based on the local population. In Palmas, 239 cases of PM were recorded between 2014 and 2023, representing 43.45% of the deaths caused by DM. The occurrence was more frequent in men (137 cases; 57%), especially in the 60 to 69 age group (123 cases; 51%), and predominated among individuals with low educational attainment. The majority of deaths (182 cases; 76%) occurred in hospitals. The analysis revealed a stationary trend in PM due to DM during the period from 2014 to 2023, with an average rate of 8,3 per 100,000 inhabitants and an average annual variation of 1,19% (p=0,417). These results underscore the need for specific interventions aimed at the prevention and control of DM, focusing on the most vulnerable groups, as well as integrated health actions and continuous monitoring.
