Association between pain, physical disability and mental health in elderly people from the University of Maturity (uma) of Palmas-TO.
Abstract
Introduction: Population aging presents challenges related to the physical and mental health of older adults. Objective: This study investigated the association between chronic pain, physical disability, and mental disorders among older adults enrolled at the University for the Third Age (Universidade da Maturidade - UMA) in Palmas-TO, Brazil. Methods: This observational, cross-sectional study was conducted with 67 older adults. Structured questionnaires were employed to assess pain, physical disability, and symptoms of mental disorders. Results: A predominance of females was observed, along with a high prevalence of comorbidities such as hypertension and diabetes. Statistical analysis revealed a moderate correlation between pain, disability, and psychological symptoms, suggesting that greater disability stemming from pain is associated with increased intensity of mental disorder symptoms. Conclusion: The findings indicate that chronic pain and functional limitations significantly influence the mental health of older adults, highlighting the importance of integrated intervention strategies to improve the quality of life within this population.
