Perfil sociodemográfico e penal dos homens quem cumprem pena em uma unidade penal no sul do Tocantins
The sociodemographic and penal profile of men serving sentences in a penal unit in southern Tocantins
Abstract
This study aims to describe the sociodemographic and criminal profile of men deprived of liberty at the Gurupi Penal Unit (UPG), located in the state of Tocantins. It is a documentary study with a quantitative approach, based on the analysis of 240 inmate records. The data show that the majority of inmates are between 26 and 35 years old, have low levels of education, weak family ties, a background in informal employment, and are originally from the same state. Most identified themselves as brown, single, with children, and with previous experiences in the prison system. The main reason for incarceration is drug trafficking, followed by homicide and bodily injury, with arrest in flagrante delicto being the most common means of entry into the facility. These findings reflect a recurring pattern of incarceration that predominantly affects socially vulnerable individuals, highlighting the need for public policies focused on prevention, education, and resocialization. The study contributes to a better understanding of the local prison context and to the development of more effective social reintegration strategies
