Abstract

The literature shows a high prevalence of malnutrition in heart disease patients, which can reach up to 90%. Therefore, heart disease patients may have a longer hospital stay and risk of readmission, in addition to an increased mortality rate. The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnosis of malnutrition using the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria and its association with in-hospital mortality in heart disease patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). This is a retrospective cohort study. Sociodemographic, clinical, and anthropometric data were collected from the medical records of patients admitted to the ICU from 2022 to 2024 at a public hospital in São Luís-MA. The GLIM criteria were used for nutritional diagnosis. Multivariate and univariate analyses were performed using logistic regression to assess the relative risk (odds ratio) for mortality, adjusted for the Simplified Acute Physiology Score III (SAPS III) and age variables. Moderate malnutrition was present in 32.4% of the sample and 6.4% were severely malnourished. The chance of mortality was approximately 3.5 times higher in patients with heart disease admitted to the ICU with severe malnutrition (p 0.048). GLIM criteria were shown to be relevant for predicting the prognosis of patients with heart disease.
