Abstract

Mammography is a radiographic examination that evaluates breast structures and
constitutes an important tool for the diagnostic screening and staging of breast cancer.
Screening mammography is performed periodically in asymptomatic women with the
aim of identifying the disease at an early stage, enabling more effective and less invasive
therapeutic interventions. This study aimed to analyze the profile of screening
mammograms performed in the municipality of Palmas, Tocantins, from 2018 to 2023,
considering the total number of examinations and the sociodemographic characteristics
of the women assisted.
Screening mammograms performed in women aged 35 years and older were analyzed.
A marked reduction in the number of examinations was observed in 2020, followed by
gradual recovery in subsequent years. Most examinations were concentrated in the 50
to 69-year age group and were classified as BI-RADS 1 and 2. Underrepresentation of
Black and Indigenous women was identified, along with a predominance of annual
screening intervals, to the detriment of the recommended biennial interval, and care
delays exceeding 30 days in a portion of cases.
It is concluded that inequalities in access and organizational weaknesses persist, which
may compromise the effectiveness of breast cancer screening in the municipality.
