Abstract

Gestational diabetes mellitus represents a challenge for Primary Health Care, especially regarding disease understanding and adherence to treatment during prenatal care. This study aimed to analyze pregnant women’s perceptions of the diagnosis of gestational diabetes mellitus and its relationship with the quality of prenatal care. This is a qualitative, exploratory, and descriptive study conducted at the Sarah Leylane da Silva Sousa Family Health Unit in the municipality of Palmas, Tocantins, Brazil. Four pregnant women diagnosed with gestational diabetes mellitus participated in the study, selected through non-probabilistic sampling, corresponding to all eligible users during the data collection period. Data collection was carried out through semi-structured interviews, and data analysis followed the content analysis technique proposed by Bardin. The results revealed limited knowledge about the disease, significant emotional impact at the time of diagnosis, characterized by fear and anxiety, and frequent use of the internet as a source of information. Clear guidance, professional support, and a welcoming approach contributed to reduced anxiety and improved adherence to treatment. It is concluded that the quality of prenatal care directly influences pregnant women’s coping with gestational diabetes mellitus, highlighting the importance of an educational and humanized approach in Primary Health Care.
