Abstract

Objective: Describe the incidence and sociodemographic characteristics in order to identify young people with HIV/AIDS in Brazil. Materials and Methods: Ecological study that included young people aged 15 to 24 years old reported with HIV/AIDS in the Notifiable Diseases Information System (SINAN) throughout the Brazilian territory from 2001 to 2021. Univariate statistics were used to describe the sociodemographic profile. For temporal trend analysis, the incidence rate is calculated in each year considered and the Joinpoint method is used, considering p<0.05. Results: 89,083 cases of HIV/AIDS were registered among young people, with the largest proportion being men (n=56,727; 63.6%), aged 20 to 24 (n=72,605; 81.5%), with secondary education or higher education (n=27,368; 55.2%), heterosexuals (n=30,121; 33.8%), brown or black color/race (n=30,387; 34.0%) and residents in the southeast region (35,899; 40, two%). In Brazil, the average incidence rate was 12.91/100,000 inhabitants, with an increase in cases in the period 2007-2014, followed by a decline in the period 2014-2021. Conclusion: Although incidence rates will decline from 2014 onwards, intervention strategies to reduce the problem, including sexual education in schools, must be intensified, with special emphasis on men and brown/black and heterosexual individuals.
