Abstract

There is a complex relationship between obesity and COVID-19 in the clinical context.
Based on this, the present study aims to elucidate the connection between these two
issues by analyzing how obesity worsens the prognosis of patients infected with SARSCoV-2 who are admitted to Intensive Care Units (ICUs). A literature review covering the
years 2020 to 2024 was conducted using databases such as the National Library of
Medicine (PubMed) and the Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences
(LILACS). The key terms included "Obesity", "Intensive Care Unit", and "COVID-19". The
analysis of the selected studies revealed factors that further influence the negative
outcomes in obese patients, such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and
cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, the importance of health care and lifestyle changes
to prevent complications from the disease is emphasized. It is concluded that obesity
significantly impacts the length of hospitalization, increases the need for intensive care
unit (ICU) admission, the use of mechanical ventilation, and the mortality rate, especially
when associated with comorbidities, in patients infected with COVID-19.
Keywords: Obesity, Intensive Care Unit, and COVID-19.
