Abstract

Obesity is a chronic condition associated with various physical and psychological comorbidities, with bariatric surgery being one of the most effective interventions for weight loss in cases of severe obesity. This study aims to review the psychological aspects of patients undergoing bariatric surgery through an integrative literature review. A bibliographic search was conducted in the PubMed and SciELO databases in October 2023, using keywords such as "mental health," "psychological," and "bariatric surgery." Studies published between 2018 and 2023 addressing the psychological impacts of bariatric surgery were included. A total of 11 studies were selected. The results indicate that bariatric surgery can bring temporary improvements in anxiety, depression, and binge eating, as well as enhance quality of life and body image satisfaction. However, some patients, particularly those with a psychiatric history, may face persistent psychological challenges, including an increased risk of self-harm and suicide. Additionally, patients undergoing reoperations or those affected by the COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated greater psychological vulnerability. In conclusion, bariatric surgery offers both physical and psychological benefits, but continuous psychosocial follow-up is essential to mitigate risks and promote long-term mental well-being.
