Abstract

The study addresses the impact of the unexpected caregiver role, emphasizing the emotional, physical, and social challenges faced. This quantitative, cross-sectional, and descriptive research was conducted in Gurupi-TO with caregivers of patients receiving home care. The results indicate that most caregivers are women, Black, with low education and limited income, dedicating themselves entirely to caregiving, often without any technical training. Emotional and physical overload was evidenced by the Zarit Burden Interview, highlighting stress and health impacts. The discussion reinforces the need for public policies focused on training and supporting these individuals. It is concluded that the lack of technical and social support harms both caregivers and patients, making the implementation of care and educational strategies essential.
