Abstract

Introduction: Parkinson's Disease is a progressive neurodegenerative condition affecting the Central Nervous System and stands as the second most common neurodegenerative pathology among the elderly. It manifests with both motor and non-motor symptoms, with frequent occurrence of intestinal constipation. Objective: To determine the occurrence of constipation in a sample of Parkinson's Disease patients attending a specialized clinic in the interior of Pará, characterizing sociodemographic and clinical profiles, and correlating potential factors associated with constipation, as well as estimating the time of its onset. Methodology: A cross-sectional, descriptive, retrospective study based on a medical chart’s review of patients diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease and treated at a specialized clinic in the interior of Pará from 2014 to 2019. Results: The mean age of the Parkinson's Disease patients was 70.83 years, with 60% being male, and the most reported occupation was farmer. Intestinal constipation was the most frequent dysautonomic manifestation (36%), correlating with both motor symptoms (postural instability and falls) and non-motor symptoms (depression/ anxiety) and specific medication therapies (Amantadine and dopaminergic agonists). Conclusion: Intestinal constipation was common among patients diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease, representing the predominant dysautonomia and often occurring prior to the onset of motor symptoms in many cases.
