Abstract

Introduction: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia resulting from imbalances between insulin secretion by the pancreas and cellular responsiveness to insulin. In Brazil, a worrying factor is the increase in the number of elderly people diagnosed with DM. In order to develop self-care for elderly people, support from the family nucleus is necessary. Objective: To understand the impacts of family support in the care of elderly people diagnosed with Diabetes Mellitus. Methodology: This is a bibliographic research, of the integrative review type, carried out between February and April 2024, in the Scielo, Pubmed, and Medline, Ibecs, LILACS, and Bdenf databases, both within the Virtual Health Library (VHL). Results: The selection of nine articles allowed us to identify the main types of family support, including social, informational, instrumental, financial, and emotional. The presence of family members is essential for the adequate treatment of DM for the elderly. The lack of family support for the elderly population with DM favors non-adherence to treatment. Final considerations: Different types of family support help in the treatment of DM for the elderly.
