Abstract

Introduction: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is characterized by the backward flow of gastric acid into the esophagus due to dysfunction of the lower esophageal sphincter, leading to symptoms such as heartburn, regurgitation, dry cough, and dysphagia. This condition can progress to serious complications and significantly affect patients' quality of life. Objective: To evaluate the prevalence and impact of GERD on the lives of adults, considering different social and cultural contexts. Methodology: An integrative literature review was conducted using databases such as the Virtual Health Library, SciELO, LILACS, and PubMed, covering studies from 2014 to 2024 with descriptors related to GERD. Results: The selected studies revealed a substantial negative impact of GERD symptoms on physical, emotional, and functional aspects of patients’ lives. Conclusion: In light of the identified burden, it is essential to implement strategies aimed at reducing risk factors and improving comprehensive care, including educational actions and strengthening healthcare services.
