Abstract

Introduction: The Toxoplasma gondii is a mandatory intracellular parasite that infects humans, domestic and wild animals. Those can be contaminated by oral, by accident or inborn. Objective: Was to verify if the anthropometric measures of newborns of puerperal chronically infected mothers by Toxoplasma gondii would have differences in the measures of children of mothers susceptible to the disease. Methods: The study was performed in a population of 79 children of puerperal mothers that were born in a maternity of vertical transmission standards in the city of Goiânia in 2015. Results: From the 79 newborns assessed, 41 were children of mothers chronically infected by Toxoplasma gondii and 38 children of mothers not infected. All of them had their anthropometric measures collected from their own handbook. In comparison between the thoracic perimeter and the cephalic perimeter, 31 children were classified as inadequate and two mothers chronically infected were small to the gestational age according to the Lubchenco’s classification. Conclusion: In the comparison of the 41 newborns born to mothers with T. gondii, 38 children of susceptible mothers showed no signs, symptoms or characteristics resulting from exposure to the parasite.
