Abstract

Introduction – Acute diarrhea is a health problem present in several regions of the world, especially where there are situations of extreme poverty, and in recent years, some researchers have been trying to find an alternative treatment for probiotics, especially lactobacilli and bifidobacteria. Objective - gather evidence available in the literature on the effectiveness of the use of probiotics in the management of acute diarrhea in children and list their main benefits for the population. Methodology – Descriptive study of the literature review type, which sought to answer the following guiding question: How effective is the use of probiotics in the treatment of acute diarrhea in children? The literature search was performed in the PubMed, MEDLINE, LILACS and SciELO databases, published between 2015 and 2020. Results – 11 articles were selected for review after applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Discussion – The analysis of the effectiveness of the use of probiotics was carried out mainly from the results of weighted studies and considered their role in the severity and duration of diarrhea, length of stay of patients, time of abstention from day care centers and/or schools. Clinical parameters such as vomiting, fever and adverse drug effects were also evaluated. Final considerations - The collection studied suggests that the benefit of using probiotics is not so evident, although their methodologies present, in most cases, a failure in the number of individuals studied.
