Skin diseases in rural populations in Brazil: an Integrative Review.

Abstract
The integumentary system is the largest body organ and plays an essential role in homeostasis, constituting one of the main barriers against pathogens. In rural Brazilian populations, in addition to socioeconomic adversities, there are poor conditions of assistance and access to health services, which can be determinant in the clinical and sociodemographic profile of integumentary involvement. This study aimed to carry out an integrative literature review based on the guiding question “What is the state of the art on dermatological diseases in rural populations in Brazil?”. A bibliographic search was carried out for articles published between the years 2011 to 2021 in the databases of the National Library of Medicine (PubMed), Scientific Electronic Library Online (Scielo) and the Virtual Health Library (VHL) portal, using if the descriptors as follows: dermatological diseases AND rural populations AND Brazil. 202 articles were found, of which 156 were in PubMed, 1 in the Scielo database and 45 in the VHL. 8 articles were removed because they were duplicates, thus totaling 194 articles for title reading. After reading the title, there were 30 articles left for the reading of their abstracts, which added to the exclusion and inclusion criteria resulted in 5 works to compose the instrument for categorization of studies in this integrative review. There was a remarkable lack of information on dermatological involvement in rural Brazilian populations. Furthermore, socioeconomic variables and inequality in access to health services can be determinant for the development of skin diseases in these populations.
