Abstract

The admission of a child to the Intensive Care Unit is a traumatic time for family members. This study aimed to understand how the Franklian Pillars are present in the experience of family members of children admitted to the ICU after the nurse's help. This is a qualitative study, whose data sources were medical records, open interviews and application of the help process. Five family members of children admitted to that sector participated. The theoretical reference was Viktor Emil Frankl's Existential Analysis. Data analysis was guided by the Humanistic Existential Personalistic Triadic Configuration and five categories emerged. It was understood that the family member experiences the Tragic Triad and transcends to Tragic Optimism with the help of the nurse in the care practices. The study contributes to the reorganization of care for family members of children in PICU and enabled the nurses of the study to implement the Help Process and understand the experience and existential condition of these family members.
