Abstract

Objective: identify forces involved in the process of mothering in the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: Qualitative research, in which more than children born during the COVID-19 pandemic were interviewed. The deposits are subject to Content Analysis, in light of the field of force theory. The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee. Results: The mapping of the forces allowed the proposition of the following categories: "Mothering in a scenario of many places and few presences", "Building motherhood amidst the fear of the other, of the disease and of death" and "Motherhood in the here and now of the child and the woman". Conclusion: The pandemic context contributed to the exacerbation of the restrictive forces of fatigue, overload, anxiety, loneliness, fear, absences, and the risk of exposure and contamination by the disease. These forces compromised the women's physical and mental well-being and, consequently, interfered in the process of motherhood. On the contrary, being with and for the child and the home office work, acted as driving forces, collaborating to the interaction and construction of the woman/child bond, and consequently, to motherhood.
