Occupational stress in intensive care health professionals

Abstract

Objective: To understand the experience of professional stress in the Intensive Care Units of a reference hospital in the city of Belém, Pará. Methodology: Qualitative study, based on Grounded Theory. 19 professionals working in the four intensive care units participated in this study. Results: The emerging Substantive Theory “Experiencing professional stress in the intensive care environment” was supported by the following categories “Environmental Stressors”, “Work Conditions” and “Emotional Experience” interconnected in the care stressors in the Intensive Care environment. Final Considerations: This theoretical model made it possible to identify the various factors associated with physical and emotional exhaustion that left these professionals vulnerable to occupational stress. Balance comes to represent exactly the achievement of the desire for satisfaction using the available resources in the most rational way.
