Abstract

Introduction: Meningitis is a pathology that affects the nervous system and can be caused by several agents. In Brazil, it is an endemic disease, with constant occurrence and sporadic outbreaks. The lethality is high and can cause serious sequelae. Objective: To analyze the occurrence of meningitis in Tocantins between 2015 and 2020. Methodology: The study used data from the Sistema de Informação de Agravos de Notificação (SINAN) of the Ministério da Saúde, analyzing variables such as etiology, age, gender and municipality of residence. Results: Between 2015 and 2020, 314 cases of meningitis were reported in Tocantins. Most occurrences were viral meningitis (33.5%), followed by bacterial meningitis (29.0%). The city of Araguaína had more viral cases, while Palmas had more bacterial cases. Discussion: The lethality in Araguaína was low, possibly due to patient safety protocols. The prevalence of bacterial meningitis in Palmas contradicted the national trend, possibly related to local characteristics. The drop in notifications in 2020 may have been influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic and vaccination. Conclusion: The study analyzed the epidemiological profile of meningitis in Tocantins, highlighting the need to improve control actions, especially in Palmas.
