Abstract

Objective: To carry out an integrative literature review on the effects of care for elderly people with Alzheimer’s disease on the quality of life of family caregivers. Materials and methods: Integrative literature review carried out in the Scielo, Pubmed and VHL databases with a time frame of 10 years (2012 -2022) using the descriptors “Alzheimer’s disease”, “caregivers” and “quality of life” with the Boolean operator AND. Results: 16 articles are part of this study that identified the impacts that the routine of care for the elderly with Alzheimer’s disease brings to the quality of life of the family caregiver. Stress, depression, anxiety, social isolation, negative thoughts, tension, irritation and even hyperglycemia, diabetes, headache, arthralgia, among others, were observed as negative consequences for the emotional and physical health of these caregivers. Conclusion: The results of this study allow us to conclude that the quality of life of caregivers of elderly people with AD is sustained by daily care. The fact that the caregiver is a family member and lives in the same residence as the elderly, this routine ends up being even more stressful and that the greater the functional dysfunction of the elderly and the lack of information about the disease, the greater the burden.
