Abstract

Objectives: In this review, we systematically evaluated the effects of vitamin D deficiency on inflammatory markers in inflammatory bowel diseases. Research Methods & Procedures: We conducted a systematic review of observational studies in the PubMed, Scopus, Science Direct, and Web of Science databases. The selection of papers and evaluation of their methodological quality were carried out by two independent reviewers and disagreements were resolved by a third reviewer. Data Analysis: Ten papers were included, out of which only three found no association between vitamin D and inflammatory markers. The cut-off points for vitamin D deficiency ranged from <20 to ≤35 ng/mL. Conclusions: Vitamin D deficiency is associated with an increase in inflammatory markers in patients with IBD, demonstrating the importance of this micronutrient in modulating the inflammatory response.
