Abstract

The study aims to evaluate the prevalence of depression and its associated factors in the population of the city of Alegre, Espírito Santo. An epidemiological study with a cross-sectional design was carried out, using a household survey, between November and December 2021. The descriptive analysis was carried out using frequency distribution for categorical variables, and using mean and standard deviation for continuous variables. Factors associated with the occurrence of depression were identified using Poisson regression with robust variance. 697 individuals were interviewed, with an average age of 53 years, the majority of whom were female (72.9%). The prevalence of depression was 20%. The factors associated with depression were female individuals, smokers, with poor/very poor self-perceived health, on polypharmacy, with problems adhering to treatment, using medicinal plants and having fewer hours of sleep per day. The results of the study highlight the importance of developing strategies aimed at reducing the prevalence of this disease in this population.
