Work-related accidents involving exposure to biological material in medical professionals
Abstract
This study examined the profile of medical professionals involved in Occupational Accidents with Exposure to Biological Material (ATEMB) and the factors associated with these incidents. A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using data from DATASUS, covering cases reported between 2007 and 2022. The findings showed that the majority of those affected were men (55.04%) aged 20 to 39 (75.18%). Clinical doctors were the most commonly reported professionals (53.54%). The majority of accidents occurred during surgical procedures (55.45%), with the most frequent outcome being a negative source patient discharge (44.36%). However, 1.5% of cases led to seroconversion, and 0.06% resulted in death. The study underscores the need for improved health training and the consistent use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to mitigate the severity of these accidents. It also highlights the importance of maintaining a safe work environment and ensuring adequate supervision to prevent accidents and safeguard the well-being of healthcare professionals.
