Prevalência de Trichomonas vaginalis em mulheres no Brasil
Revisão sistemática da literatura
Abstract
The present study aimed to analyze the prevalence of Trichomonas vaginalis in cervicovaginal samples and vaginal secretion swabs, as well as to relate other pathologies and/or microorganisms that are associated with infections caused by the protozoan through a systematic review. The research was carried out by consulting the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), PubMed and Virtual Health Library (BVS) databases using the terms: "sexually transmitted infections", "prevalence", "Trichomonas vaginalis", "vaginitis", “vulvovaginitis” alone or in combination, in Portuguese and English. Original papers and brief communications related to the subject were included, thus, 14 eligible papers were analyzed. A higher prevalence of T. vaginalis was found in studies conducted in basic health units in the North and Northeast regions, with positivity percentages ranging from 12.7% to 19.0%. Considering the diagnostic techniques, the Pap smear and direct fresh examination were the most used. Other microorganisms associated with infection by the protozoan were found, such as the human papillomavirus and Candida spp. In view of the data, it was possible to observe a considerably high prevalence of positive samples for T. vaginalis in the studies, in addition to verifying other pathologies that may be associated with infection by the protozoan. Thus, the importance of awareness and treatment, in addition to the prevention of trichomoniasis, is highlighted, since the infection favors the entrance of other pathogenic microorganisms.
