Abstract

Human papillomavirus (HPV) infects squamous cells of skin, and oral and genital mucosa. The viral infection has been associated with cervical, oral and anal cancers. The present study aimed to analyze the presence of the virus in clinical samples in Brazil. Thus, a systematic review was conducted through the search of papers in PubMed, Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) and Google Scholar databases. Among the 36 selected papers, 36.1% analyzed the presence of the virus in cervical samples. The global prevalence of HPV in the different samples corresponded to 41.8%, with a higher prevalence in the anal region and HPV16 was the most frequent genotype. Finally, 80.6% of studies performed some technique to identify the HPV genotype, and hybridization was the most used one. Therefore, given the oncogenic potential of the virus, it is necessary to continue the epidemiological studies related to the prevalence of HPV and risk factors associated with the evolution of the infection, as well as to encourage sexual education programs and vaccination campaigns.
