Respiratory diseases and the use of medicinal plants by São Luís-Maranhão population

usage profile and possible associated risks

Abstract

Respiratory diseases, whether acute or chronic, are present in all age groups and have various forms of manifestation. The treatment of respiratory diseases with medicinal plants has been documented in several countries, with diverse cultural and environmental contexts. The present study aimed to evaluate the use of medicinal plants for respiratory diseases by the population of São Luís, Maranhão, for characterization and detection of possible risks and benefits of this therapeutic practice. The research took place with 100 people interviewed from December 2023 to February 2024, the majority of whom were female (84%), aged 18-25 (37%). The use of leaves predominated (42%), orally (80%), with emphasis on Plectranthus barbatus (52%), Mentha x piperita (39%) and Allium sativum (23%) as the most cited species. Among these three most cited plants, only Allium sativum has proven scientific support for use in respiratory diseases. Our study reflects the need to strengthen communication between health professionals and the population regarding the safe and rational use of Phytotherapy, with a view to reducing the possible risks associated with this therapeutic practice.
