Abstract

COVID-19 is a viral disease that started in 2019 and since its course several complications have been evidenced with emerging data that indicate neurological sequelae in the pediatric population after infection with SARS-Cov-2. From this perspective, the objective was to investigate the correlation between the involvement of COVID-19 and the appearance of neurological manifestations in the pediatric population. This is an integrative literature review, carried out using the Virtual Health Library (VHL), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SCIELO) and Public Medline or Publisher Medline (PubMed/MEDLINE) databases published in the last 5 years. The most described neurological manifestations after viral infection were encephalopathy and seizures, present in 100% of the selected articles. In addition, cerebrovascular events such as stroke, headache, and meningeal signs were reported in 83.3% of the literature. Several studies try to explain the pathophysiological aspects of SARS-Cov-2, theories point to the viral correlation with the development of a hyperinflammatory state and immunological exacerbation mechanisms triggering the observed neurological manifestations and establishing specific neurological involvement in the central nervous system of this population. From this analysis, several complications triggered by the involvement of COVID-19 in children and adolescents were verified. Furthermore, there is a need for further studies to assess these clinical repercussions in a developing brain.
