Abstract

Tooth loss has an impact on oral health, with negative repercussions on individuals' dentition and overall well-being. This study assesses the proportion of tooth extractions in the state of Maranhão (2017-2022), considering age groups, gender, and oral hygiene guidance. Employing a cross-sectional approach and secondary data from the Primary Care Health Information System (SISAB), the indicator of the proportion of tooth extractions relative to dental procedures (PERP) was calculated. Explanatory variables encompass gender, age groups, and oral hygiene guidance. Data analysis included descriptive statistics, multiple linear regression, and Pearson correlation. A higher proportion of tooth extractions was observed in males (p<0.001), with a significant increase in tooth loss starting from the following age groups: 30-39 (p<0.015), 40-49 (p<0.001), 50-59 (p<0.001), and 60+ (p<0.001). Oral hygiene guidance had a positive impact on reducing tooth loss (R=-0.691 and p<0.001). Men and age groups starting from 30 years old are more susceptible to tooth loss in Maranhão. Additionally, oral hygiene guidance proved effective in reducing tooth loss. These findings underscore the importance of prevention strategies and targeted dental care for these higher-risk groups.
