Abstract

There is a complex relationship between bariatric surgery and Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) in the clinical context. Based on this, the present study aims to elucidate the relationship between both topics, examining how different bariatric procedures impact the occurrence and severity of GERD. A literature review was conducted covering the years 2021 to 2023, using databases such as the National Library of Medicine (PubMed) and the Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS). Keywords included "Bariatric Surgery," "Gastroesophageal Reflux," and "Relationship." The analysis of three selected studies highlighted the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) and vertical gastrectomy (VSG), showing significant weight reductions but a higher incidence of reflux symptoms and reflux esophagitis in patients undergoing VSG compared to RYGB. Therefore, the importance of evaluating the preoperative reflux profile in choosing the bariatric procedure is emphasized, considering not only weight loss but also the potential impact on reflux symptoms. A careful and personalized approach is essential in bariatric surgery selection, given the complex relationship between obesity and GERD.

Keywords: Bariatric Surgery. Gastroesophageal Reflux. Relationship.
