Abstract

Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) represents a public health problem, with low survival rates. This study aims to characterize deaths due to OHCA registered in the SAMU notification system in Montes Claros (MG) over a 4-year period, including the COVID-19 pandemic. This is a descriptive and cross-sectional study, with a quantitative and retrospective approach, which analyzed SAMU records on OHCA in Montes Claros (MG) between 2018 and 2021. Data were collected on age, sex, time of occurrence and progression to death, excluding individuals under 18 years of age, incomplete and illegible records, and OHCA due to external causes. Of the 1,682 patients evaluated, 86.3% died, with a predominance of elderly people and morning occurrences. During the pandemic, an increase of 216 cases was observed, with a higher incidence in women (p=0.01) and a 1.393 times higher risk of death (p=0.006). It is noteworthy that social isolation and reduced access to emergency services may have made early interventions difficult, contributing to the increase in deaths. It is concluded that the pandemic may have contributed to the increase in deaths due to PCR, therefore, it’s recommended to monitor the elderly and women and strengthen preventive programs.
