Antioxidant and antimicrobial potential of Campomanesia adamantium (Cambess.) O. Berg leaf
Abstract
Campomanesia adamantium O. Berg leaves are popularly used for therapeutic purposes, and their activities are related to flavonoids. There are reports of antimicrobial activity for different extracts obtained from this species with organic solvents. In this context, teas were prepared from the leaves of C. adamantium and the levels of flavonoids, antioxidant potential and antimicrobial activity were evaluated in this study. Infusion and decoction of extracts showed the similare profile in UV and IR spectroscopy. The infusion showed higher extraction yield, flavonoid content and antioxidant potential compared to the decoction. However, the two teas showed the same values of antimicrobial activity. The lowest minimum inhibitory concentration was 250 µg mL-1 for Enterococcus faecalis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus epidermidis.
