Abstract

A subject of increasing interest for evidence-based dentistry refers to enamel development defects, exemplified by hypomineralization in deciduous second molars. In this sense, the present study aimed to study the prevalence of this condition in five-year-old preschool children enrolled in the public and urban school system of the city of Porto Nacional – Tocantins. For the analysis of the dental crowns, a validated index was used to locate deciduous second molars with demarcated opacities with clear edges and enamel with healthy thickness. Thus, 448 preschoolers (51.6% female and 67.2% brown) were evaluated. The condition studied was present in 38 children (8.48%). Therefore, there is a need for longitudinal studies to evaluate the causes and effects of the condition studied in this population.
