Abstract

Objective: To analyze the pharmacological management of arterial hypertension among Amazonian riverine people with knowledge about the diagnosis. Methods: A population-based cross-sectional study “Health, Medicines and Self-Medication in Riverside People in the Amazon” conducted with 471 riverside people from Coari-Amazonas. The MF was assessed with the question “do you take any medication to treat high blood pressure or hypertension?” Demographic, socioeconomic, anthropometric, blood pressure and MF values were collected for the treatment of hypertension. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used. Results: About one in ten riverside dwellers interviewed (11.6%) had knowledge about the diagnosis of arterial hypertension. Of these, 43.6% did not perform MF and only 8.4% had blood pressure control. More than half (54.2%) of hypertensive patients used monotherapy, whose consumption was angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (69.2%) and angiotensin receptor blockers (30.8%). Conclusion: Despite the therapeutic regimens used being supported by guidelines, poor MF and low disease control were observed. In this riverside scenario, whose geographic access significantly compromises access to services, the resolution of health problems, perhaps, may have in the community health agent, one of the main protagonists.
